No other mammal’s migration is as long, both in time and distance traveled, as an elephant seal’s. As a result, the seals are really depleted when they get back to their home beaches. That’s when they’re ready to haul out.

The term haul-out is borrowed from the maritime world. It refers to the time, usually once a year, when a boat moored on the water is hauled out to fix it up and make it seaworthy again. It’s the time to scrape off barnacles and fill any holes or cracks. Elephant seals don’t have barnacles growing on them, and they don’t develop any holes or cracks, but they do need their time off, which is spent on the beach.
